$, FCF pe 12 luni −42,4 mld., „meaningfully more in 2027” (CNBC 29.10, din comunicat).

🔬 Ce: „Large Language Models with At Most One Spike per Neuron” — Zhuoya Zhao, Parsa Omidi, Aref Jafari, Richard Naud (Huawei + Universitatea din Ottawa), arXiv 2609.05151, septembrie 2026.

Window: 30.10–01.11. A weekend, but not a quiet one. On Friday the market put a price on the 828 billion that five companies have promised for 2026 and took a trillion out of the Nasdaq 100 in a single day. On Saturday the Financial Times wrote that OpenAI had shrunk its ask: 20 billion instead of 30, at 1.25 trillion instead of 1.4. The same Saturday, Altman was sitting in Yongin with more than fifty Samsung presidents, at the table where it gets decided who receives memory. Three facts, one thread: the price of compute is being renegotiated from the top down, and the house that writes our infrastructure is about to put its own price on the board in exactly these weeks.

LEAD — OpenAI shrinks its round: 20 billion at 1.25 trillion, not 30 at 1.4

What: Financial Times, Saturday 31.10 (the article could not be read directly; picked up by CNBC and Bloomberg the same day): OpenAI has cut the target of its current round to ~$20B at a post-money valuation of ~$1.25 trillion, down from $30B at $1.4 trillion. The round is led by MGX (Abu Dhabi) and Coatue; Friday's commitment deadline has passed, the round stays open, and the figures "may still change". It is not a down round: the last public valuation was below this. It is a smaller ask, put on paper the same day Fortune was adding up hyperscaler capex and the Nasdaq was coming off its worst day since June.

Why it matters: Three things.

  1. The first downward repricing of a frontier lab by the private market, inside Anthropic's IPO window. The comparable just got 11% cheaper on valuation and a third smaller on size. Anthropic has not yet filed the amendment with a price range (EDGAR, checked 01.11: nothing since 26.10), and CNBC wrote on Saturday that the listing comes "in the coming weeks", without Q3 figures. Whoever lists first into a falling market takes the price; whoever does not list takes the mark.
  2. Who closes the round matters more than how much. MGX and Coatue at the front means Gulf sovereign capital plus a growth fund, not the banks that carried Anthropic's S-1. If OpenAI's price window narrows, the pressure moves onto the compute contracts (Oracle, CoreWeave, Microsoft) that were signed on the assumption the money arrives at 1.4.
  3. For us, directly: Blackstone's BB rating (yesterday), the trillion erased on Friday and the shrunken round today are the same sentence spoken by three mouths: the cost of capital for the frontier is rising. A lab with more expensive capital defends its inference margin. That reaches the price per token and what stays free.

Caveat: every figure is from the press (FT via CNBC/Bloomberg), not from a document; OpenAI has not commented; "1.25 trillion" is the target, not the close.

On Friday the market put a price on the 828 billion: a trillion wiped off the Nasdaq 100 in one day

What: Fortune, Saturday 31.10, added up the AI capex promised for 2026: Amazon ~$220B, Alphabet up to 205, Microsoft ~170, Meta up to 145, SpaceX (with xAI) up to 88 — $828B. Friday 30.10: Nasdaq −2.9%, S&P 500 −1.8%, the worst one-day moves since June; Nasdaq 100 companies lost more than $1 trillion. By name (CNBC 30.10): Intel −25% after weak Q4 guidance, Micron −5.5%, Nvidia −4%. Underneath, Amazon's Thursday-evening report, which had not entered the editions until now: Q3 capex $77.3B (cash capex 75.9), against 35.1 a year earlier and 58.7 expected; 2026 held at ~$220B; Jassy: "meaningfully more in 2027"; AWS +39% to ~$46B, with over 40% growth promised for 2027 and 2028 too; trailing-twelve-month FCF −$42.4B; Q4 guidance of 240–247B below the 244.5 consensus; the stock −6% after the close.

Why it matters: With Amazon, three of the four hyperscalers have negative FCF (Alphabet −9.1B for the quarter, Meta negative, Amazon −42.4 over twelve months); the only one in the black is Microsoft, which cut its capex guidance to 170 from 175 because third-party GPU providers were late. Alphabet financed itself with bonds, Meta with equity; Amazon has not yet said with what. Friday was not a day "about AI": Intel dragged semiconductors down, and Fortune itself says it is a correlated move, not a verdict on capex. But it is the first day the 828 sum sat next to a trillion erased in the same headline, and precisely in the days when Anthropic is preparing its price.

Altman in Yongin: more than fifty Samsung presidents, on a Saturday

What: On Saturday 31.10, Sam Altman met more than 50 presidents of Samsung affiliates at the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin (Financial News, Kyunghyang Shinmun, 31.10). The stated subject: AI strategy for the next ten years. No figures, no volumes, no dates. The letter of intent for memory and data centres is the one from October 2025; an "extension" of it, circulated by an aggregator, is not confirmed.

Why it matters: On the same day it shrinks its round, OpenAI goes in person to the neck of the bottle. Memory is where the shortage is declared "through 2030" (SK Hynix, 28.10, in past editions), where Q4 DRAM contract prices rise 10–15% (TrendForce, September), and where whoever sits at the table receives wafers. A lab negotiating directly with the memory maker, over the heads of Nvidia and the hyperscalers, moves by one step who controls the chokepoint. For the house: the same wafers that become HBM do not become LPDDR for a Pi or DDR5 for a local box; next year memory at home costs more than it does today.

Risk lens — the private market, the public market and Amazon's balance sheet, on the same day

  • Priced: OpenAI, 20B at 1.25T instead of 30B at 1.4T (FT 31.10, via CNBC/Bloomberg): the first downward repricing of a frontier lab inside Anthropic's IPO window. Friday 30.10: Nasdaq 100 −$1T, Intel −25%, Micron −5.5%, Nvidia −4%. Anthropic: no S-1/A on EDGAR through 01.11; Q3 unpublished; the listing "in the coming weeks" (CNBC 31.10). New question: at what valuation does OpenAI's round actually close, and who else is in it besides MGX and Coatue.
  • Financed: Amazon Q3: capex $77.3B, trailing-twelve-month FCF −$42.4B, "meaningfully more in 2027" (CNBC 29.10, from the release). Three of four hyperscalers with negative FCF; Alphabet on bonds, Meta on equity, Amazon still unsaid. New question: how Amazon funds 2027 — bonds, leases or non-voting stock, as Alphabet did in June.
  • Insured: nothing new in the window. The only voice on capacity remains the S-1 (27.10 in past editions).
  • Moved by law: nothing new in the window.
  • 🔁 Blackstone/BB (31.10), Alphabet −12.6% (29.10), Nvidia–Nscale (30.10): in past editions, not repeated.

Frontier — language in a single spike

🔬 What: "Large Language Models with At Most One Spike per Neuron" — Zhuoya Zhao, Parsa Omidi, Aref Jafari, Richard Naud (Huawei + University of Ottawa), arXiv 2609.05151, September 2026. A 1.5-billion-parameter LLM (GPT-2 XL scale) in which each neuron fires at most once, and the value lives in the timing of the spike (time-to-first-spike). Figures: average over LAMBADA plus seven commonsense tests 49.5 versus 51.6 for dense GPT-2; WikiText perplexity 26.6 versus 20.4; LAMBADA drops from 51.2 to 39.4. The BERT variant: 0.80 transitions per neuron per inference, against 1.2 for SpikeLM and 3.2 for SpikingBERT. Energy is a proxy on the spike count, with no memory traffic and no measurement on neuromorphic hardware.

Why it matters: The 72nd axis, and the first time the spiking line reaches the scale of a real language model. A neuron that fires only once means sparse, event-driven additions, exactly the shape the always-on chips we have written about want (Innatera Pulsar in August, Loihi 2 in October). It is not usable today: it loses two points on the average and twelve on LAMBADA. But it is proof that the question "can a language model be event-driven rather than matrix-driven?" already has an answer at 1.5 billion, not just at 100 million. For a local box on a battery, this is the road, not the GPU.

In brief

  • Anthropic IPO: no S-1/A with a price range on EDGAR (full-text search 27.10–01.11); a roadshow "at the earliest ~10.11" is an inference from SEC rules, not an announcement.
  • Fortune 31.10 recalls that Nvidia-backed Firmus withdrew its IPO in October and that neoclouds without investment-grade ratings are losing lenders as rates rise (CNBC 29.10).
  • Memory: TrendForce published no new prices in the window; DDR4 8G spot sits at ~$46.9 (28–30.10).

Killed

  • The Information 29.10 (DeepSeek, Moonshot and "GPT-6 Astra", distillation): the underlying event is from July, OpenAI's blog from 30.09; the new report names Kimi K3.1 Pro and V4.1-Flash, but it is outside the window.
  • CNBC 29.10, Nvidia responding to the report that Jensen Huang was targeted by a Chinese intelligence asset: outside the window, no document.
  • DOE $5B for Constellation (28.10): outside the window.
  • "Extension of the OpenAI–Samsung LOI", "Apple Intelligence on Qwen 31.10", "Anthropic at $1.5T+": no primary source or misdated.
  • Moonshot closing Kimi K2 to new API customers: product, to Dispatch.
  • CoreWeave CDS at 1,041 bp (27.10, aggregator): outside the window and a weak source.

For us

  • Claude/Anthropic as platform: the comparable got cheaper, the market fell, the creditor said "…REDACTED"; the listing comes anyway "…REDACTED". A lab that lists into a falling market defends its inference margin. We watch the price per token and what stays free, not the headlines.
  • Pi and local AI: Altman at Samsung, SK Hynix "through 2030", DRAM +10–15% for Q4: memory is the chokepoint, and the memory at home gets dearer after the memory in the datacenter. What we keep local, we keep on memory bought this year, not next. Today's frontier (one spike per neuron) is exactly the shape of model a box on a battery wants.
  • Portfolio: Friday hit semiconductors through Intel, not through AI; hyperscaler capex was confirmed, not cut (Microsoft −5B from delays, not from a change of mind). Whoever sells shovels (memory, chips) keeps the orders; whoever buys them on debt pays more for them.
